The Importance of Liming Agricultural Soils

Liming is a process that prepares the acidic soil for planting season. It is the application of calcium- and magnesium-rich materials in various forms, including marl, chalk, limestone, or hydrated lime to the soil. In acid soils, these materials react as a base and neutralize soil acidity. 

Many plants simply won’t grow in acidic soils which is why it is important to use agriculture lime on-farm soil. Acidic soil decreases plant growth by inhibiting the intake of major plant nutrients -nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. There are many reasons why soil becomes acidic and here are a few ways:

  1. Applying chemical fertilizers which is the number one contributor 
  2. Mineral loss that is caused by crop removal over time
  3. Heavy rainfall causing leaching of land 

The benefits of liming affect your crop yield greatly by providing the acidic soil a source of calcium and magnesium for plant growth.  It not only increases the pH level but it also allows water penetration that acidic soils lack. By improving the absorption of plant nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, your crops will have a better chance of survival.
