February Garden Preparations

PlantingSeedPotatosDollarphotoclub_64368902February is already here and we offer tips on how to start getting your Garden ready for Spring:

Preparing Flowerbeds

Prepare flowerbeds by weeding and amending soil with organic matter prior to planting annuals. Mulching will help in preventing weeds, maintaining constant soil moisture and reduce soil-borne diseases. This should be done immediately for transplanted annuals.

Fertilize

It’s time to fertilize established shade trees and prune fruit trees. Wait until June to fertilize newly planted fruit trees. Fertilize established fruit trees in the latter part of February to early March, and again in early May.

Yard Preparation

Don’t forget about your yard! Its time to spread pre-emergent for stickers
and crabgrass. Also, check your irrigation and/or sprinkler systems.

Planting

Continue to garden prep, and if possible, due to recent rains, plant onions and potatoes. Red LaSota, Kennebec White, and Yukon Gold are available at Standley’s . It’s not too late to plant cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, spinish, brussell sprouts, carrots, or beets, as well as other crops that tolerate cooler weather. It’s also a great time to plant fruit, shade, and pecan trees, as well as blueberries, blackberries, and grape vines. You can also get started on cold-tolerant herbs such as chives, cilantro, oregano, garlic, parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme.
