Fall means it’s time to freshen up the flowers in our landscaping.  Some options to consider include alyssums, dianthus, Johnny-jump-ups, pansies, snapdragons, and violas.

Consider planting berried plants. They not only provide food for birds (cardinals, mockingbirds, and wax wings) but also supply that extra special look that flowers or shrubs don’t offer.

As for fall lawn fertilizing, timing is critical.  For this region of Texas, when you don’t need to mow for two weeks it’s time to fertilize!  This is usually around October 15th.  Fall fertilization increases winter hardiness which in turn helps to resist winter weeds due to maintenance of denser turf.  Fertilizing your lawns in the fall also helps prolong fall color and helps your lawn green-up in the spring.

Continue to plant and cultivate cool-season vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, collards, mustards, turnips, cabbage, leaf lettuce, kale, spinach, snow peas, carrots, beets, and swiss chard.

Want some fun festive, and colorful decorations for fall?  Try mums of various sizes and colors, pumpkins, gourds, or corn stalks!  These ought to help rid you of the “dog days of summer” and begin new ideas for the upcoming holiday seasons!
