Paul’s Garden Blog: Spring Garden Prep

spring garden prepIt’s difficult to think about spring gardening with the recent “cold spell”, but now is the time to start Spring Garden Prep!

Here are some things to consider when preparing for Spring:

  • Water at least twice a month in the absence of rain- fruit trees, vegetables, lawns, flower beds
  • Remove winter-type weeds and plant debris from vegetables, shrubs or flower gardens.
  • February is pruning month for shrubs, trees, and perennial flowers.
  • Consider using pre-emergent herbicides to prevent warm-season weeds. Do not use this type of herbicides if you are planning to grow plants from seed.
  • Adding organic material to the soil when you plant your flower beds or vegetable gardens can increase the soils’ ability to retain moisture and increase air in the soil.
  • It’s time to fertilize established shade trees. Wait to fertilize newly planted fruit and pecan trees.
  • Utilize plants in landscapes or vegetable gardens that are proven for USDA hardiness zones 8A & 8B for this area.
    1. 8A for the northern parts of the county.
    2. 8B for the southern parts of the county.
  • Finalize soil prep for rose planting.

It’s time to plant Onions, Potatoes and Cool season vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, Brussel sprouts, carrots, beets, & cabbage.

We have trees in stock including Pecan, Fruit, Blueberries, Blackberries, and Grapes.
